Pallasmaa served as a Pritzker Architecture Prize jury between In addition to his many academic and public roles as the director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture, he has realized many projects in his own architecture office. He has taught at the Washington University in St.

In spite of the many architecture projects he has completed, Pallasmaa may be best-known as a theorist and educator. He has taught at universities all over the world, including Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He has written and lectured extensively on cultural philosophy, environmental psychology, and architectural theory. His work has been inspired by the simplicity of Japanese architecture and the abstraction of modern Deconstructivism.

He promotes a back-to-basics, evolutionary approach to architecture that has become revolutionary in the 21st century. He told interviewer Rachel Hurst that computers have been misused to replace human thought and imagination: "The computer has no capacity for empathy, for compassion. The computer cannot imagine the use of space. But the most important thing is that the computer cannot hesitate. Working between the mind and the hand we often hesitate, and we reveal our own answers in our hesitations.

Because architecture is fundamentally about life, I find the literary classics, or any fine novels and poems, to be essential books on architecture.

Sound allows us to imagine a space without actually seeing it. Despite attempts to create a visual copy of this experience in a new building, it is virtually impossible. We are bombarded constantly through our eyes, with only the details being formed through our other senses. The other senses are underappreciated in architecture. The thin steel plates are like the patches in a quilt.

His early career is characterised by concerns with rationalism, standardization and prefabrication. This was partly due to the influence of his mentor Professor Aulis Blomstedt, who was very much concerned with proportional systems and standardization. However, the key models for this type of architecture were both Japanese architecture and the refined abstractions of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In Finland this type of architecture is referred to as "constructivism" - with only a family resemblance to the avant-gardist Russian Constructivism - and at that time, the late s and s, stood in opposition to the work of Alvar Aalto , who was increasingly seen in his home country as an idiosyncratic individualist. It was after returning from teaching in Africa that Pallasmaa turned away from pure constructivism, and took up his concerns with psychology, culture, and phenomenology.
