El invento es el punto de partida del progreso y consiste en la creacin o descubrimiento de algn objeto que debido a procesos de imitacin se diseminan y avanzan dentro del tejido social, hasta encontrar un escollo. La imitacin, segn Tarde, consiste en la reproduccin cuasi fotogrfica de una imagen cerebral que admite dos modalidades, la lgica y la extralgica. La imitacin lgica est forzosamente vinculada a los aspectos racionales y utilitarios del invento; as, la tendencia a imitar algn avance tecnolgico, es directamente proporcional a su utilidad o valor cientfico. La imitacin lgica se disemina en forma concntrica, es decir, del centro hacia la periferia e irradia primero a los estratos ms cercanos a la fuente del descubrimiento, para a la postre, influenciar a los crculos ms alejados.
