JASENOVAC AND THE HOLOCAUST IN YUGOSLAVIA PDF

Jewish refugees from the Nazi Germany are not welcome here. The Pact was extremely unpopular, particularly in Serbia and Montenegro, and demonstrations broke out. On 27 March, Serb military officers overthrew Prince Paul. The new government withdrew its support for the Axis, but did not repudiate the Tripartite Pact. The German Military Commander in Serbia appointed a Serbian civil puppet government to carry out administrative tasks in accordance with German direction and supervision. The police and army of the puppet government were placed under German commanders.

Its purpose is to further the work of establishing the total number of victims of genocide and fascism in World War II Yugoslavia. Although the Yugoslav government published the census in under the title War Victims , it decided not to release it. This list, which is fully accessible here to the public for the first time, lists over , war fatalities over the territory of wartime Yugoslavia.

The list was not available at all until , and was shelved for a number of reasons. While the census attempted to include all victims of the fascist occupation in wartime Yugoslavia, including the victims of the system of death camps at Jasenovac, it needs to be emphasized that the data collected in this census is incomplete.

Many of the victims of Jasenovac and other camps are either not yet collected in any census, or were not included in this one. It is a database that should be seen as a tool toward reaching a better knowledge of the real magnitude of the crimes of genocide committed by the Croatian Ustashe, the Nazis and their fascist collaborators, and a means for building a comprehensive list of known victims of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia.

It is not a definitive list of Holocaust or Jasenovac victims. This means that this is a work in progress. All of the data presented here can be edited, expanded or removed with the help of the public and other researchers. It will depend on the assistance of many people of good will with direct knowledge of the victims willing to provide information for updates and corrections to the list.

But many of the victims will never be known, and therefore knowledge of total victims will require other methodologies. Nobody has complete data on Jasenovac, on the Holocaust in Yugoslavia, or for that matter on the Holocaust in general. There were too many victims and too many unknown stories. This is one way of working toward as complete a record of the truth as possible, and we hope, a living and respectful tribute to all of the victims of one of the most horrible crimes in history, particularly the crimes of genocide against Serbs, Jews and Romas, which need to be better understood by all of humanity.

Victim's List

These camps were used to isolate and murder Jews, Serbs, Roma also known as Gypsies , and other non-Catholic minorities, as well as Croatian political and religious opponents of the regime. The largest of these centers was the Jasenovac complex, a string of five camps on the bank of the Sava River, about 60 miles south of Zagreb. In late August , the Croat authorities established the first two camps of the Jasenovac complex—Krapje and Brocica. These two camps were closed four months later. Conditions in the Jasenovac camps were horrendous. Prisoners received minimal food. Shelter and sanitary facilities were totally inadequate.

The book also includes a forty- page introduction, ninety-seven photographs and a thirty-seven page appendix of never-before-translated documents. The thirty chapters cover all aspects of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia and especially fascist Croatia. Allen, Jr. Everybody knows about Jewish holocaust but Serbian holocaust in Independent State Of Croatia remained pretty much hiden from public eye. Reason for this is, of course, that Vatican and Catholic Church were very much involved in all major war crimes commited by Croatia against its Serbian population during WWII. This book is written by an expert on Balkan affairs and professor of History, Barry Lituchy.
